'Die Hard 5,' which finds John McClane in Russia, needs a new director and 20th Century Fox has reportedly come up with a short list that includes the directors of indies 'Attack the Block' and 'Drive.'
In addition to Joe Cornish ('Attack the Block') and Nicolas Winding Refn ('Drive'), the studio is looking at Justin Lin ('Fast Five'), and John Moore ('Max Payne'). While all the other directors have plenty of experience, Cornish's urban alien invasion flick was his first film, and he might seem an odd choice for such a huge franchise.
Then again, Noam Murro, the director originally attached to the as-yet-untitled fifth film, only had the indie comedy 'Smart People' under his belt before being tapped for the job. He's opted to direct another big sequel instead, '300: Battle Of Artemisia.'
Refn, whose hotly buzzed 'Drive' opens next month, might be too busy. He plans to reteam with Ryan Gosling for 'Only God Forgives,' another action film that shoots late summer in Thailand, and 'Logan's Run,' again with Gosling. Lin is next committed to another 'Fast and the Furious' film and a 'Terminator' film.
Some reports have already given the job to the Irish Moore, whose other films include remakes of 'The Omen' and 'The Flight of the Phoenix.'
'Underworld' director Len Wiseman helmed 2007's 'Live Free or Die Hard,' with its over-the-top fighter jet freeway standoff, CGI overload and toned-down PG-13 rating, but is now busy with his own remake of 'Total Recall.'
