Christopher Meloni, who just left his long-time gig as Detective Elliot Stabler on 'Law & Order: SVU,' has already thrown his name into the big screen hat -- he's in negotiations to take what's being described as a major role in 'Man of Steel,' Zack Snyder's reboot of the Superman franchise. Already on hand for the December 2012 release are Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Russell Crowe and Julia Ormond (as Superman's Krypton parents), Kevin Costner and Diane Lane (as ma and pa Kent) and Michael Shannon as bad-boy Zod. Ray Liotta -- no stranger to crime yarns -- has joined the cast of 'A Place Beyond the Pines,' the Derek Cianfrance ('Blue Valentine') directed actioner about a motorcycle stunt rider (Ryan Gosling) who starts robbing banks to support his family and runs head on into a determined rookie cop (Bradley Cooper). Liotta will play a corrupt police officer. [Variety]

John Goodman
is in talks to join Ben Affleck's 'Argo,' a political thriller based on a Wired magazine article about a real-life covert mission in 1979 mounted by the CIA and the Canadian government to rescue six American diplomats held hostage in Iran -- by claiming that the diplomats were actually part of a Hollywood crew scouting locations for a science fiction film titled 'Argo.' Hollywood make-up and effects experts John Chambers (an Oscar winner for 'Planet of the Apes') and Bob Sidell were called in to help along the ruse. Goodman would play Chambers. Alan Arkin has already joined the cast. [Variety]

Robin Williams is in negotiations to play a priest in the ensemble comedy 'Gently Down the Stream,' about a long-divorced couple who, for the sake of their adopted son's wedding and his very religious biological mother, pretend they're still married. Heading up the cast as the ex-married couple is Robert De Niro and Diane Keaton; also in the film are Katherine Heigl, Amanda Seyfried (as the bride), Susan Sarandon, Ben Barnes (the groom)and Patricia Rae. The film goes into production this July in Greenwich, Conn. [Variety]
