Ethan Hawke has joined Columbia Pictures' remake of 'Total Recall,' the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger action movie that was based on Philip K. Dick story 'We Can Remember It for You Wholesale.' The film stars Colin Farrell.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the plot of this version -- directed by Len Wiseman -- will shift from Mars back to the Earth. In the original, a man haunted by a recurring dream of journeying to Mars buys a virtual dream vacation from a company called Rekall Inc.; when he awakens he believes that he's a secret agent destined to overthrow a corrupt official controlling the production of air on Mars. THR says the new story will eliminate the Martian storyline and instead involve nation states Euromerica and New Shanghai, with Douglas Quaid (Farrell) a factory worker who begins to believe he's a spy, although he doesn't know for which side.

The film is scheduled for a June start in Toronto, for an August 2012 release. Bryan Cranston plays the villain; Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel are in negotiations for the female leads.

Hawke's role is being kept secret.
