CATEGORIES Movie NewsMalin Akerman, whose new film 'The Bang Bang Club' just screened at the Tribeca Film Festival, has been cast in a key role in the big-screen adaptation of the Broadway musical 'Rock of Ages.' Akerman will play a music journalist who is seduced by a rock star (Tom Cruise).
'Rock of Ages' begins filming later this month in Miami. The 'Watchmen' actress will be squeezing the jukebox musical into an already jam-packed schedule that, according to IMDb, includes seven different films in various states of production.
Producers pursued Oscar-nominees Anne Hathaway and Amy Adams for the role, but neither was available due to scheduling conflicts. Hathaway is about to begin filming director Christopher Nolan's 'The Dark Knight Rises,' in which she plays Selena Kyle / Catwoman. Adams recently finished the star-studded 'The Muppets,' due this fall, and is getting ready to put on her journalist cap to play Lois Lane in Zack Snyder's highly anticipated 'Superman: Man of Steel.'
Using '80s-hair-band rock to guide its story, 'Rock of Ages' is about a small-town girl (Julianne Hough) who moves to Hollywood to pursue a career in music but is nearly brought down by the excesses of the 1980s music scene.
The Adam Shankman–directed film also stars Diego Boneta, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Russell Brand, Alec Baldwin, Mary J. Blige and Paul Giamatti; it hits theaters June 1, 2012.
