It seems that you face the apocalypse and a possible romance with one Keira Knightley. Deadline reports that Steve Carell has signed on to star in an upcoming romance called 'Seeking A Friend for the End of the World,' and Knightley is currently in negotiations to co-star. The project will mark the directorial debut of Lorene Scafaria, who penned the 2008 film 'Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist.'
Now one might think that an apocalyptic backdrop for romance would probably mean that Knightley only grabs Carell in one of those last-man-on-Earth scenarios, but it looks like the '40-Year-Old Virgin' gets to pitch his woo.
The movie will focus on what happens on Earth when mankind has to come to terms with the fact that a humanity-destroying asteroid is barreling towards the planet. Carell will play a man who finds himself abandoned by his wife in the wake of the news, only to get a letter from his high school sweetheart that she wants to be with him when the world ends.
Should she sign on the dotted line, Knightley will play his neighbor, who "accompanies him on the road trip as love blooms at the worst possible time." This isn't some science-fiction romance where the power of love rips through the sky at the right moment to save mankind, but Deadline states that "despite the doomsday climax, the film has a somewhat comic and romantic tone."
Is this a sign that Knightley is breaking out of corsets for the modern world? And, will that end up bringing about the end of the world?
