'What to Expect When You're Expecting,' the hip "users" guide to pregnancy that has resided on the New York Times' bestseller list for some 500 weeks, is going to be turned into a movie via Lionsgate. The studio has tapped Kirk Jones ('Waking Ned Devine' and 'Nanny McPhee') to direct. According to Lionsgate, the film adaptation of the book will be an ensemble rom-com "in the vein of 'Love Actually' and 'Valentine's Day.' The film is a modern look at love through the eyes of four interconnected couples experiencing the thrills and surprises of having a baby, and ultimately coming to understand the universal truth that no matter what you plan for, life doesn't always deliver what's expected." The Cannes Film Festival has confirmed that Terrence Malick's 'The Tree of Life' will screen at this year's event, most likely in an out-of-competition slot in the official selection, according to Deadline. The Fox film -- a period piece centered around three boys growing up in the 1950s -- stars Sean Penn and Brad Pitt. Cannes will unveil its official selection next month. Woody Allen's 'Midnight in Paris' already has been slated as the opening-night film.

David Seidler, who won this year's Academy Award for Best Screenplay for 'The King's Speech,' has lined up his next two projects: Warner Bros. has tapped him to rewrite the family drama 'The Judge' and he's working on the Kennedy/Marshall Co. and RT Features' 'Games of 1940.' 'The Judge' centers on a lawyer who visits his family for his mother's funeral only to discover that his father, who suffers from Alzheimer's, is suspected of murder. David Dobkin is directing. 'Games of 1940' is a true story about a group of international POWs who hold their own Olympics while in a Nazi prison camp. [TheWrap]

Sony's long-gestating biopic of illusionist and escape artist Harry Houdini is one step closer to reality: The studio is in talks with director Francis Lawrence ('I Am Legend') to work on a new version of the project. A previous effort in the late '90s involved Paul Verhoeven directing a film that was said to shed light on the magician's mysterious life, according to Variety. This new project -- if Lawrence (whose next film, Fox's 'Water for Elephants,' will open April 22) accepts -- will be a large-scale period production emphasizing Houdini's showmanship.
