Johnny Knoxville is at the top of the list to play Moe Howard in Peter and Bobby Farrelly's modern update of 'The Three Stooges,' and Knoxville is interested in the coveted role, according to Variety.
The movie, which the brothers had been developing for years at MGM before Fox took it over, is now moving full-steam ahead and if Knoxville accepts the part, it will get the ball rolling for casting for the other Stooges, Larry Fine and Curly Howard.
Benicio del Toro, Sean Penn and Jim Carrey originally had shown interest in the lead roles. The casting of Knoxville, however, changes the demographics for the film, opening the door for other, younger actors to come aboard -- leaving the likes of a Steve Carrell on the sidelines for a Jonah Hill.
According to Variety, the plan is to divide the PG-rated film into three, 27-minute segments driven by physical comedy, something that Knoxville excels at.
