Last time Superman was on the big screen, the 80-something Eva Marie Saint played Martha "Ma" Kent to Brandon Routh's Clark Kent. But just like 'Spider-Man' and the 'X-Men' are looking to skew a little younger, Zack Snyder's take on the Man of Steel is getting a boost of youth.

But it's not in the Supes department. (Henry Cavill is 27.) On the heels of rumors that Kevin Costner would play Pa Kent in 'Superman,' Warner Bros. has announced that Diane Lane has signed on to play Martha Kent.

Forty-six might not seem young to some, but in a parental role usually dominated by older women, with a pushing-30 Superman, it's certainly a twist on expectations.

In a press release, Snyder explained his choice:

This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.

This isn't, however, the first time Lane has played mother to someone with special powers. In 2008, she played mom to Hayden Christensen's David Rice in 'Jumper.'

Assuming Kevin Costner signs on the dotted line as well, what do you think of our new Ma and Pa Kent? Can they bestow the wisdom Superman needs to live as a super-man on Earth?
