With the release of 'Hall Pass' last week, the Farrelly Brothers are once again in the news. The latest film from the masters of the raunchy comedy pulled in $13.4 million over the weekend, but the bigger deal is the announcement that the bawdy bros are mulling over doing their very first sequel.
Moviehole caught up with Bob Farrelly during the Australian 'Hall Pass' press junket this morning, and while the filmmaker was quick to update everyone on the status of 'The Three Stooges' (more on that after the jump ...) he also took a moment to tell the site that he and brother Peter are mulling over ideas for a follow-up to their 1994 hit 'Dumb and Dumber.'
"[Dumb and Dumber] has run a bunch of times on TV in the states, and kids will come up and they'll be able to quote lines from that -- lines that I've long forgotten. If we could get those two guys back together, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels that might be a worthwhile sequel -- and that ball is in motion. We're starting to think about what those two dimwits would be doing 20 years later in life, and hopefully we'll be able to come up with something worthy of a sequel."
Hit the jump for more details on the Farrelly's upcoming projects.
Astute fans will realize that 'Dumb and Dumber' has already had a follow-up, the Farrelly-less 'Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd.' That film wasn't nearly as well received as the original, no doubt because it lacked both the Farrellys' penchant for disgustingly hilarious comedy and original stars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels. Eric Christian Olsen and Derek Richardson might have looked sort of like Harry and Lloyd, but they were no Carrey and Daniels in terms of comedic ability.
Don't start lining up for a sequel now, though. Even if 'Dumb and Dumber' numero dos does come to fruition, it seems likely that it will be quite some time before it hits multiplexes.
The Farrellys are currently hard at work trying to get 'Three Stooges' off the ground and looking for actors to star in the project. Bobby Farrelly tells Moviehole that Australian actor Shane Jacobson is in the running to play Curly. The casting isn't official, but the actor is getting serious consideration, it seems.
Farrelly also goes on to add that the Stooges film will be a bit of a departure for the duo, dropping the R-rated shenanigans fans are so familiar with in order to stay true to the spirit of their subjects:
"We'll probably be a lot less typically Farrelly brothers stuff. We're going to be as true as we can to the spirit of The Three Stooges. They weren't raunchy or outrageous, they were more about the slapstick, almost vaudeville-type humor. It'll probably be less us, more of them."
At any rate, news of a potential 'Dumb and Dumber' sequel is interesting. If the Farrelly brothers are getting into the business of updating some of their classic films, let's hope 'Kingpin 2' is in our future. What do you guys think? Would you rather see the Farrellys return to their old stomping grounds, or does a 'Three Stooges' movie get you more excited?
