Paul Greengrass' drama about the assassination of Martin Luther King -- 'Memphis -- has been given a green light by Universal Pictures, according to Deadline. That reunites the studio with Greengrass, who made two Bourne sequels and 'The Green Zone' with the company. 'Memphis' is now at the top of the list of forthcoming productions about Dr. King, which includes a Ronald Harwood-scripted DreamWorks project supported by King's heirs, Lee Daniels' 'Selma,' and Oprah Winfrey's seven-hour miniseries for HBO. 'Memphis' is being produced by Scott Rudin, the Oscar-nominated producer of 'The Social Network' and 'True Grit.' Production is scheduled to begin in June.

Patrick Wilson and James Marsden may be climbing into the 'Loft,' a remake of the 2008 Belgian hit thriller that will be directed by the original's helmer, Erik Van Looy. The story revolves around five close married friends who share a loft to meet their mistresses. When they find the body of a young woman in the loft, the men begin to suspect each other of murder. Anonymous Content is producing the indie film, which is expected to go into production in the spring. [Variety]

And the remakes keep a-coming. Paramount wants to redo its 1991 'Soapdish,' a behind-the-scenes comedy about the world of soap operas. According to The Hollywood Reporter, actor-writer Ben Schwartz has been hired to write the remake of the film, which starred Sally Field, Robert Downey Jr., Teri Hatcher, Kevin Kline, Cathy Moriarty, Elisabeth Shue and Whoopi Goldberg. Producers of the new version include Rob Reiner and the original's Alan Greisman.

The Motion Picture Association of America's annual tabulation of box office receipts gave Hollywood a mixed message Tuesday: While global box office hit an all-time high of $31.8 billion in 2010, the North American market saw a decline of 5 percent in overall admissions, with a total of $10.6 billion flowing into movie theaters, about on par with 2009's take (the drop in ticket sales was offset by increased admission prices, particularly for 3D, which contributed $2.2 billion to the total).
