While we can't exactly say that a new incarnation of the 'Three Stooges' was ever desired, there was a morbid, drive-by-the-accident curiosity at the thought of Benicio del Toro, Sean Penn and Jim Carrey re-envisioning the characters. Penn as Larry ... it would either be a train wreck or a moment of brilliance dating back to the days of 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High.'

But as time moved on, and the casting rumors grew more typical and less insane. As of January, Peter and Bobby Farrelly were looking at the likes of Johnny Knoxville, Andy Samberg and Shane Jacobson. Now Justin Timberlake is leading the potential casting possibilities.

Yep, 'The Social Network' star could potentially play Larry, and the Farrellys are looking far and wide to find their ideal Stooges.

How far and wide? The Boston Herald reports that Timberlake could star alongside Knoxville, who's still in the running, and Will Sasso as -- no surprise -- Curly. However, they're also looking at Woody Harrelson and Larry David for Larry, Hank Azaria for Moe and an unknown for Curly. Bobby Farrelly explains:

We haven't cast it yet. We haven't picked anyone. It's a little tricky, right? Because they all have to be about the same age, and even around the same height. We're waiting for that first person that we're going to say, 'This is going to be our Moe, Larry or Curly' and we'll build around that. But it's going to happen soon. It will be within three weeks.

Time's a-ticking because the duo are scheduled to shoot the film in Georgia this April, which doesn't leave a whole heck of a lot of time. If it takes them another three weeks to decide, the lucky new Stooges will have maybe a week or two to prep.
