Today, Jan. 20, is 'Blue Velvet' and 'Mulholland Drive' director David Lynch's 65th birthday.
Lynch is known for his unique and surrealist cinematic style, which led people to coin the phrase "Lynchian" to describe it. His film's are often characterized by dream imagery and meticulous sound design.
His first film 'Eraserhead' was released in 1977, and gained a cult following with midnight movie screenings. His next, 'The Elephant Man' in 1980, garnered Lynch mainstream success. He has received three Academy Award nominations for Best Director, for 'The Elephant Man,' 1986's 'Blue Velvet' and 2001's 'Mulholland Drive,' for which he also received a Best Screenplay nomination from the Golden Globes.
Lynch's keen eye and storytelling finesse show the true art behind directing. So happy birthday to one of our favorite directors!
