The first official photos of Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander in the upcoming English-language adaptation of 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' have arrived online courtesy of a spread in W magazine. Here we get our first solid look at what director David Fincher has planned for his version, which, like the original Swedish film starring Noomi Rapace as Salander, will be set in Sweden despite the fact that it will be in English.

There are definitely differences between the two Lisbeth Salanders. Mara's version seems skinnier, malnourished and dare we say a bit more of a badass than Rapace's Salander. The two images available feature Mara straight-on in a cover shot, as well as one featuring Mara sitting up on her knees in a chair with a cigarette hanging out of her mouth while some dude tattoos her ass. That last one should give us a good indication of where Fincher plans to take the character, who, in the book, is a tough, no-nonsense woman whose brilliant mind often takes a backseat to the emotional wounds caused by a troubled past.

'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' hits theaters on December 21st and co-stars Daniel Craig, Stellan Skarsgard, Robin Wright, Max von Sydow, and Christopher Plummer. Check out the other image after the jump (though keep in mind it may be slightly NSFW).
