At first it sounded sort of like a pipe dream. ("Hey, if we ever become rich and famous, let's try and make a Muppet Movie! Wouldn't that be hilarious? Us and the Muppets?") And then we wondered if maybe it wasn't such a good idea. But now that there's visual evidence that this new Muppets movie is actually happening ... man, it'd be great if Jason Segel and director James Bobin could pull this off.
Pictured above is the very first image from 'The Muppets,' a new flick written by Jason Segel and Nick Stoller that's not due for release until December of next year. But already we're pretty excited for this experiment. The loyal Muppets fans have suffered through some truly subpar TV films in recent years, but obviously this new project feels a bit more exciting. Almost like a new beginning, hopefully. There's a very large demographic out there that'd be more than willing to embrace the Muppets all over again ... provided that our beloved puppets get some material worthy of their talents.
For those who may be new to the Muppets and their cinematic exploits, we'd heartily recommend the original trilogy ['The Muppet Movie' (1979), 'The Great Muppet Caper' (1981), and 'The Muppets Take Manhattan' (1984) ] or the "next generation" triple feature of 'The Muppet Christmas Carol' (1992), 'Muppet Treasure Island' (1996), and 'Muppets from Space' (1999), but aside from those films (and the classic variety series, of course), we cannot vouch for adequately Muppet-like quality.
