Just last week it was announced that the lovely Emma Stone was set to play Gwen Stacy, the romantic interest of a one Peter Parker, and now we know who is going to be playing the other crucial role in Spider-Man's (Andrew Garfield) life. Columbia Pictures have just sent out a press release announcing that director Marc Webb and company have given the villain role in their 'Spider-Man' reboot to Welsh actor Rhys Ifans. Unfortunately that is about all we know at this point, as Sony are staying tight lipped as to who that actual villain will be.

Yet while we may not know if Ifans will be playing Venom, Lizard or any of the other baddies rumored for the film, we might as well get a little refresher about what we know of Ifans as an actor. He's been a working actor for well over a decade, but Yanks may not instantly recognize his name as his body of work has been, until recent years, mostly confined to films from across the ocean. He's perhaps best recognized as the titular character from the charming Australian film 'Danny Deckchair,' but most recently he was seen in the Ben Stiller dramedy 'Greenberg,' heard as the narrator of 'Exit Through the Gift Shop' and shall soon be seen as Xenophilius Lovegood in 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.'

If you need any further fuel for your speculation, Webb's comment regarding the casting might be particularly helpful:

"What sets the Spider-Man villains apart is the complexity of their relationships with Peter Parker. Rhys' incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character."

Warmth, rage, and a particularly complex relationship to Parker? Our guess is the Lizard. What's yours?
