Derek Cianfrance's 'Blue Valentine' is making major headlines today after the MPAA ruled to give the indie drama a surprising NC-17 rating.
According to Deadline, the rating reportedly had to do with a scene from the film in which its main characters, Dean and Cindy (Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams), head to a low-brow motel in attempt to save their failing marriage. The scene reportedly involves some sex and nudity, but no violence. Now, some are wondering why it wasn't simply given an R-rating.
No word yet on what the film's distributor, the Weinstein Co., plans to do. The MPAA had no comment on the decision, according to Variety.
In the meantime, you can check out a brand-new -- and, uh, much happier -- trailer for the film, which hit the Internet today.
'Blue Valentine' opens in select theaters on Dec. 31.
