Deadline is exclusively reporting that Oscar-nominated writer-director Tony Gilroy ('Michael Clayton') will helm the fourth chapter in the Jason Bourne series, tentatively titled 'The Bourne Legacy.' This will mark Gilroy's first time directing a 'Bourne' film, though he's already familiar with the franchise, having written its first three movies.
The decision to use Gilroy as director now puts the franchise in a tricky situation, however, as star Matt Damon said he would not return for a fourth movie unless it was directed by Paul Greengrass, who helmed 'The Bourne Supremacy' and the Oscar-winning 'Bourne Ultimatum' in 2004 and 2007, respectively.
Still, Deadline indicates that Universal is expected to move forward with 'Legacy,' with or without Damon.
Further details on plot and a release date were not announced.
