So, what do I love about Almost Famous? Well, to begin with, everything.
First things first: 'Almost Famous' is a great movie. It's equal parts funny and heartwarming, it's effortlessly quotable, it has iconic scenes, its characters are all great and well-developed, it tells an incredible story, and so on, and so on. It's one of those rare movies that I'll always watch to the finish whenever I see that it's on TV, and it's one of those even rarer movies that has a considerably better director's cut (which is really saying something, considering it runs 162 minutes). But to me, and to many other people like me, it's more than just a fun flick.
When I first saw the movie (I think I was about 13 or 14), it was the first time I realized that there were other ways to get into the music world besides picking up an instrument myself. Ever since then, I've wanted to go on the kind of adventure that main character William gets himself into when he asks to write about Stillwater. To say that 'Almost Famous' is what got me into music would be a little ridiculous; it wouldn't be a stretch to say that it's one of the reasons why I became a journalism student.
I saw little bits of myself in William, and that affected me a lot, but more than anything, I could relate to this: 'Almost Famous' is writer/director Cameron Crowe's love letter to music, not from the perspective of a musician, but in Crowe's own words, from a fan: "someone who truly loves some silly little piece of music or some band (or anything, really) so much that it hurts."
