Ciaran HindsIrish-born actor Ciaran Hinds, known to television fans as Gaius Julius Caesar on the short-lived HBO series 'Rome,' has been cast as the villain in Columbia's upcoming 'Ghost Rider' sequel 'Spirit of Vengeance.'

According to Heat Vision, Hinds will play arguably the most villainous role known to man -- the devil -- in the film, which finds Johnny Blaze (Nicolas Cage) "struggling to repress his curse" while hiding in Eastern Europe.

Meanwhile, Italian beauty Violante Placido, who romanced George Clooney in September's box office hit 'The American,' is also in negotiations to join the film, in which she would play the mother of the devil's mortal son, whose body he wants to take over. Rider, of course, is called upon to stop it all from happening.

In the meantime, Hinds, who has appeared in everything from the Oscar-winning 'There Will Be Blood' to the Nicole Kidman indie 'Margot at the Wedding,' can next be seen in 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I,' in theaters Nov. 18. He also has a role in the futuristic 'John Carter of Mars,' starring Taylor Kitsch ('Battleship') and Bryan Cranston.

'Ghost Rider,' which hit theaters in 2007, was a hit at the box office, grossing over $115 million, domestically.

The sequel will reportedly open in 3-D.
