Tommy Wirkola was a hot topic in the horror community after Dead Snow debuted last year. That film, which featured young adults trapped in the mountains fighting a battalion of Nazi zombies, was a gory good time in the Sam Raimi/Peter Jackson mold.

Soon after, Wirkola started talking about his next two projects -- a sequel and a separate film entitled Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. The latter film would take the classic fairytale characters, make them grown-ups, and watch them wage war against witches. If it's half as inventive and gory as Dead Snow, then I can tell you I'm likely to love it.

It's been a long while since we heard anything about the project, though -- so long, that I was starting to worry it had been consigned to development hell -- that dark and dreary place where many cool film projects languish before finally fading into oblivion. Luckily, that's not the case -- as this update indicates.

Jeremy Renner, star of The Hurt Locker, revealed that he's up for the part of Hansel during an interview at the Venice International Film Festival. The actor also says Girl with the Dragon Tattoo's Noomi Rapace is being considered for Gretel. If both these actors sign on, that certainly gives this project a huge boost in the respectability department. I was expecting another modestly budgeted cult film -- but with performers of Renner's magnitude, this film would be a lot more mainstream.

I like the idea of Renner and Rapace killing witches -- but what do you guys think? Comment below.
