Liam Neeson will take the helm of 'Battleship,' the Universal tentpole film that's based on the Hasbro naval combat board game, according to DeadlineHollywood.

Neeson joins Alexander Skarsgard, Taylor Kitsch, Brooklyn Decker and Rihanna in the action adventure that takes place on the land, on the seas and in the sky as a fleet of ships is forced to do battle with an armada of unknown origins in order to save the planet. Neeson will portray Admiral Shane alongside Kitsch, who portrays Shane's future son-in-law. Decker is playing Shane's daughter. Skarsgard will play the brother to Kitsch's character.

The film, which is directed by Peter Berg and is set for a May 18, 2012 release, began shooting this week.
