Demons, thieves and familiar blue aliens mark the weekend's wide releases at the multiplex. Aren't you glad summer's over?

New in Theaters: 'Avatar: Special Edition'

Starring: Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Joel Moore, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang
Directed by: James Cameron
What It's About: It's about nine minutes longer. The re-release of the BIGGEST MOVIE EVAH makes it even bigger, with added footage that includes a longer love scene between Jake and Neytiri, a longer death scene for warrior Tsu'tey, more backstory for Sigourney Weaver's anthropologist, and more action.
Why Should You See It? If you couldn't get enough of being immersed in James Cameron's brave new world last winter, or if you never got to see it in 3D or IMAX, now's your last chance before you have to settle for watching it from your sofa.
You Might Like It If You Like: 'The Abyss,' 'Aliens,' 'Dances With Wolves,' 'Pocahontas'

'Avatar': Trailer No. 2

'The Last Exorcism'

Starring: Patrick Fabian, Ashley Bell, Iris Bahr, Louis Herthum, Caleb Landry Jones
Directed by: Daniel Stamm
What It's About: Producer Eli Roth ('Hostel') tones down the gore a little In this PG-13-rated horror faux-documentary. A preacher (Fabian) who specializes in fake exorcisms gets more than he bargained for when he brings a film crew with him to the rural home of a devout farmer (Herthum) who believes his teenage daughter (Bell) is possessed. Are the family's bloody mysteries merely the products of Southern gothic repression and fanaticism, or has all hell really broken loose?

Jennifer Lopez in 'The Back-Up Plan'Staying In This Weekend?

New on DVD This Week: 'The Switch's' Jennifer Aniston isn't the only 40-ish singleton finding romance via artificial insemination. Jennifer Lopez did the same earlier this year in 'The Back-Up Plan.' (Buy or rent the DVD) Indie hit 'City Island' is a comedy set in the insular Bronx hamlet of the title about a family (led by Andy Garcia and Julianna Margulies) whose members are keeping a variety of secrets from each other. (Buy or rent the DVD)

Also Out This Week: A pre-'Twilight' Robert Pattinson co-stars in 'The Bad Mother's Handbook,' a British dramedy about a mom who fears her teenage daughter will make the same mistakes she did. (Buy or rent the DVD) Colin Firth and Ben Barnes star in 'Dorian Gray,' a horror version of Oscar Wilde's classic tale of a man who never ages. (Buy or rent the DVD) Zombie guru George A. Romero's latest tale of the not-quite-deceased is 'Survival of the Dead.' (Buy or rent the DVD). 'Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg' is a documentary about radio and TV pioneer Gertrude Berg, who pretty much invented the TV family sitcom as we know it when she produced, wrote and starred in 'The Goldbergs' from 1949 to 1956. (Buy or rent the DVD) More New DVDs

Movie Homework: The granddaddy of all demonic-possession movies is still the scariest: 'The Exorcist.' (Buy or rent the DVD) A novel take on the genre, which, like 'The Last Exorcism,' smartly and surprisingly plays with stereotypes about Bible-Belt fundamentalism, is 'Frailty,' directed by and starring Bill Paxton. (Buy or rent the DVD)

As 'Takers' shows, in heist movies, the crooks are usually more stylish than the cops pursuing them. It's been that way ever since the genre began, as is clear from such classics as 'The Asphalt Jungle,' the first movie to include a major role for Marilyn Monroe (Buy or rent the DVD); Stanley Kubrick's influential 'The Killing' (Buy or rent the DVD); and the chic French jewel caper 'Rififi' (Buy or rent the DVD).

On My Netflix Queue: It's back-to-school time, which means it's time for 'Dead Poets Society,' a movie I found contrived 22 years ago (a way for Robin Williams to work his shtick into a serious, Oscar-baiting film), but which today seems to hold ever-valuable lessons -- the soul-satisfying powers of art and language, and the importance of learning to think independently and to resist blind conformity.
