According to a report at DeadlineHollywood, the studio had been flailing around, trying to find just the right actor -- with the just the right heft -- to star as a new 'M:I' operative and possibly pick up the 'M:I' mantle should Cruise exit the franchise (which is likely).

The studio previously had been looking at Tom Hardy, Chris Pine, Kevin Zegers, Christopher Egan and Anthony Mackie. Hardy and Pine were previously engaged, and, according to Deadline, Par production chief Adam Goodman felt that Renner "has a Daniel Craig quality."

The Brad Bird-directed film begins shooting this fall.

What's interesting is that Renner is not a young whippersnapper -- as one would suspect for a new 'M:I' lead. Renner's only nine years younger than the 48-year-old Cruise. (Cruise was 34 when he did the first 'M:I' film).
