Before Sean Penn goes back to his roots and plays a surfer once again, the actor wants to rock. But this isn't a light-hearted affair full of swagger and song. It's a drama coming from Italian director Paolo Sorrentino (who helmed the film on Italian ex-Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti, Il Divo). This Must Be the Place, which is shooting in Ireland, follows a rich rock star who sets out to find the ex-Nazi war criminal (living in the U.S.) who killed his father.

And, since he's a rocker, that means he needs the right look to go with it, so hit the jump and see Penn as a long-haired, determined rocker with red lips.

The picture to the left comes courtesy of Radar Online, who snapped a handful of pictures of Penn preparing for a scene. I'm sure I'm not the only one looking at that picture and wishing that we could turn back time a good twenty or thirty years and have Penn star as Robert Smith in a movie about The Cure. I never would've imagined it, but he'd make a great Smith.

Alas, we'll have to make due with this. Though it's not really making due. Aside from Penn, the film boasts the likes of Harry Dean Stanton (the war criminal perhaps?) and Frances McDormand. Though she's got a plenty of talent, and phenomenal roles under her belt, I never liked her more than when she played the carefree record producer in Lisa Cholodenko's Laurel Canyon. So, hopefully, she gets to rock. And, just to make the pot even sweeter, IMDb lists Shea Whigham as the fourth-billed. You might have caught him in indies like All the Real Girls and Wristcutters: A Love Story, or more recent fare like Fast & Furious or Barry Munday.

The film will hit theaters next year.
