"We are thrilled that audiences are not just loving 'Piranha 3D,' but cheering for it," 'Piranha 3D' producer Mark Canton said. "And it's fantastic that so many critics are really getting the movie and recommending it. We can't wait to get to work on the sequel."

A sequel at this point might seem premature, especially given the film's mediocre box office performance, but the remake to the 1978 'Piranha' most likely will earn north of $30 million before it hits DVD and VOD, ensuring a profit for everyone involved.

'Piranha 3D' was directed by Alexandre Aja and starred Richard Dreyfuss, Ving Rhames, Christopher Lloyd and Elisabeth Shue; it's unclear whether director and stars will return for the sequel.
