Both of this week's theatrical-to-DVD outings revolve around secrets, lies, and deceptions. In the comedy-of-errors 'The Back-up Plan,' Jennifer Lopez's Zoe gets pregnant just before meeting the man of her dreams; things get complicated when she decides not to tell him about it. In 'City Island,' an entire family hides things from each another, making for a gifted comedy of errors in which the truth unravels but enriches everyone's life. Read on. 'The Back-up Plan'
What It's About: After years of dating, Zoe (Jennifer Lopez) has decided that waiting for the right man is taking too long; with her biological clock ticking, she opts for artificial insemination. Naturally, on the day of the procedure, she meets Stan (Alex O'Loughlin), a man with real possibilities, and spends the rest of the movie trying to nurture a budding relationship and hide the early signs of pregnancy. When she finally reveals her situation, Stan commits fully. Spoilsport.

It's Kinda Like: "Juno" meets "Waitress" meets "The Next Best Thing"

What We Say: There's no denying that the camera loves Jennifer Lopez ... and this movie belongs to her from beginning to end. Too bad that her supporting cast can't keep up with her -- or that the plot is so formulaic that the slapstick situations -- which J.Lo is so adept at -- are telegraphed too far in advance. This is supposed to be an edgy, screwball, comedy of errors rom-com, but all we saw were the errors.
• Extras: Both the DVD and Blu-ray versions include deleted scenes and a behind-the-scenes featurette.

'City Island'
What It's About: Secrets and lies come to the fore in this comedy that follows several days in the lives of a seemingly dysfunctional family living in the small fishing community of City Island in New York. Prison guard Vince Rizzo (Andy Garcia) secretly takes acting lessons, his daughter secretly strips to pay her college tuition, his son secretly has a thing for overweight women. Throw in a volatile wife (Julianna Margulies), a long-lost ex-con son (Steven Strait) and a charismatic acting partner (Emily Mortimer) and the stage is set for misunderstanding ... and reconciliation.

It's Kinda Like:
'Everybody's Fine' meets 'The Royal Tenenbaums'

What We Say: This edgy, independent gem has it all: quiet laughs, moments of welcome introspection, warmth, outrageous situations, and a fine ensemble cast -- it's a film with heart. Deceptions, half-truths and secrets (the biggest secret, of course, is the setting for the film, an island that sits off the coast of the Bronx) resolve themselves and lead to understanding and love. What a pleasant surprise.
• Extras: Both the DVD and Blu-ray includes deleted scenes and an informative "Dinner With the Rizzos" cast discussion.
