Carey MulliganCarey Mulligan may have missed out on the lead role in 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,' but she may still get to star in a crime thriller.

According to the Hollywood Reporter's Risky Business blog, the Oscar-nominated actress ('An Education') is in talks to co-star in 'Drive,' an action thriller for Universal, opposite Ryan Gosling. 'Breaking Bad' star Bryan Cranston may be joining the cast as well.

In the adaptation of James Sallis' novel, Gosling would play a Hollywood stuntman who moonlights as a getaway car driver. Mulligan would play an ex-con's girlfriend who finds herself in Gosling's passenger seat when he goes on the lam after a bank robbery gone awry leaves him with a price on his head. Directing the movie will be Danish helmer Nicholas Winding-Refn, who made the crime thriller 'Bronson' in 2008. Adapting Sallis' novel is Oscar-nominated screenwriter Hossein Amini, who adapted last year's thriller 'Killshot' from Elmore Leonard's novel.

Mulligan, who was one of the leading contenders for the coveted role of Lisbeth Salander in 'Dragon Tattoo' that finally went last week to Rooney Mara, will be seen in two movies next month. 'Never Let Me Go,' based on the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro ('The Remains of the Day'), opens Sept. 15, and the long-awaited sequel 'Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps' opens Sept. 24.
