It's been awhile since Ron Howard made a comedy -- and his last funny flick, 1999's EdTV, wasn't all that humorous -- but the filmmaker's ready to take another stab at your funny bone with his newest effort The Dilemma.
Featuring Vince Vaughn, Kevin James, Winona Ryder and Jennifer Connelly, the film revolves around Vaughn's character -- who discovers that his best friend's wife (Ryder) may be having an affair. The "dilemma" springs from Vaughn's indecision about whether he should tell James or not since their lives are so intertwined (they own a business together).
A first look piece in USA Today's movie section is already comparing the film to Howard's earlier effort, Parenthood. I think I'd prefer to see the finished version of The Dilemma before I start making those kinds of comparisons, it would be nice to see Howard make a return to comedy cinema after spending roughly a decade making serious dramas (titles like Frost/Nixon) and big budget flicks like The Da Vinci Code.
The film is shooting in Chicago and features cameos not only from the Chicago Blackhawks hockey team, but Howard's brother Clint as well. That's right, if you've been wondering what Clint Howard has been up to since Bloodrayne: The Third Reich, wonder no more.
While the idea of Kevin James and Vince Vaughn in a comedy doesn't exactly make me want to line up for tickets now, maybe I'm in the minority. What do you think? Does The Dilemma sound appealing or will your only tough decision that weekend be deciding what to see instead? Hit the comments section to share your thoughts. The Dilemma is due in theaters on January 14th.
