Sources close to Clive Barker have informed the site that a new standalone sequel entitled Hellraiser: Revelations is currently in development. Based on a screenplay by FX technician Gary Tunnicliffe (who you might remember as the guy who caused a minor Internet holy war with his unsolicited photos re-imagining Pinhead last year), Revelations will be directed by Victor Garcia. Garcia was recently responsible for helming Mirrors 2.
Plot details are non-existent at this point, but it seems likely that Doug Bradley will be back in his S&M garb when cameras roll sometime in the near future.
The series, once a crown jewel of the horror genre, has fallen on hard times over the past few years. Barker has no real involvement with the franchise and everything released after Hellraiser: Bloodlines has gone direct to video and been of dubious quality. That seems unlikely to change here, but I suppose we can all hope.
No word on how this might affect the remake, but I suspect the impact will be minimal for two reasons: the remake might not even happen at this point and even if it does, another direct to DVD Hellraiser flick isn't going to cut into its profits.
We'll bring you more on this one as details emerge.
