It was one of the biggest scandals of the last decade: covert CIA operative Valerie Plame had her cover blown when White House officials leaked her name to the media as part of their defense of the Iraq war. Now Hollywood pundits are wondering: will a nation weary of both war and political controversy want to watch a movie based on those events?

Summit Entertainment is betting that the answer is yes but they're hedging that bet with two loaded dice: Naomi Watts and Sean Penn, who play Plame and her husband, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson. And based on the new trailer for 'Fair Game,' the adaptation of Plame's memoirs, it looks like the studio may have just rolled a seven. And based on the new trailer for 'Fair Game,' the adaptation of Plame's memoirs, it looks like the studio may have just rolled a seven.

Which could mean that Penn and Watts should start clearing space on their mantle, for while audiences may be weary of anything that even remotely touches on the Iraq war, the Academy has shown no such fatigue, 'The Hurt Locker,' you may recall, bagged six Oscars last year despite pulling in only $16.4 million, domestically.

And 'Fair Game' has at least one trick up its sleeve besides Penn and Watts: director Doug Liman, who's no stranger to fast paced political thrillers, having directed 'The Bourne Identity' and produced its two popular and acclaimed sequels.

So will 'Fair Game' escape the political trap to become a mainstream hit? Only time will tell -- the film is slated to open on November 5 -- but until then, check out the trailer and decide for yourself:
