Dr. Alex Cross is back.

A new installment of James Patterson's best-selling murder mystery series, 'Cross,' is being readied by director David Twohy and writer Kerry Williamson, with Idris Elba signed on to play Dr. Cross, according to a report at DeadlineHollywood. Dr. Alex Cross is back.

A new installment of James Patterson's best-selling murder mystery series, 'Cross,' is being readied by director David Twohy and writer Kerry Williamson, with Idris Elba signed on to play Dr. Cross, according to a report at DeadlineHollywood.

Elba will take over the role originated by Morgan Freeman, who played the detective in 1997's 'Kiss the Girls' and 2001's 'Along Came A Spider.'

In the novel, Cross tracks a serial rapist who may have murdered his pregnant wife years before. Production will begin in early 2011.

British actor Elba's credits include the HBO series 'The Wire,' 'RocknRolla,' 'American Gangster,' 'Obsessed,' 'The Losers' and the forthcoming 'Thor,' in which he plays Heimdal.
