Quick: Who is Hollywood's king of sci-fi? If you're over the age of 35, chances are the first name that popped into your head was George Lucas, while younger film fans may have gone with 'Avatar's' James Cameron. Well, step aside Lucas and Cameron, because another Hollywood heavyweight is making a case for himself, and that person is... Cillian Murphy?

Okay, so maybe he doesn't have quite the clout as those other two titans of cinema, but one thing Murphy does have in his favor is an impressive resume that's about to get even more impressive: according to The Hollywood Reporter, Murphy is close to signing on to the new Fox sci-fi flick 'I'm.mortal.' Okay, so maybe he doesn't have quite the clout as those other two titans of cinema, but one thing Murphy does have in his favor is an impressive resume that's about to get even more impressive: according to The Hollywood Reporter, Murphy is close to signing on to the new Fox sci-fi flick 'I'm.mortal.'

Murphy, of course, is currently enjoying the view from atop the box office, as his latest feature, 'Inception,' just spent three weeks as America's top grossing movie. But that's just the latest feather in Murphy's sci-fi crown; in recent years, he's also co-starred in Danny Boyle's space thriller 'Sunshine,' the modern sci-fi tinged horror classic '28 Days Later' and, oh yeah, a little something you might have heard of called 'The Dark Knight' and its predecessor 'Batman Begins.' Not too shabby.

So what will he be up to in 'I'm.mortal?' Despite the title, the movie is not actually an exploration of futuristic punctuation; rather, it's the story of a world where the aging gene has allowed people to become immortal if they are rich enough to afford it. Murphy is slated to play a member of a group known as Timekeepers, who ensure that unlicensed immortals aren't gumming up the works, with his target reportedly set to be played by Justin Timberlake.

Unofficially, that is; Timberlake is still in negotiations for the part. If that deal falls through, though, we think we have the perfect replacement for him -- Black Eyed Peas lead singer will.i.am, who would seem to have been born for the role.

Whoever Fox and director Andrew Niccol ('Gattaca') decide upon, though, they'll need to do it soon: 'I'm.mortal' is slated to begin shooting next month. And as everyone knows, time waits for no man -- not even the king of sci-fi, Cillian Murphy.
