Good news for fans of flux capacitors and improbable physics - Back to the Future is set to return to UK cinemas. Before you panic, it won't be in the form of a remake (Hollywood hasn't become that sacreligious yet) - to celebrate its 25th anniversary, the original film will have a short theatrical run in the UK before coming out (with its two sequels) on Blu-ray.

As anyone who grew up around that time will know, Back to the Future is one of THE great 80s films. Slightly more family-orientated than some of the other teen classics from that decade (ie Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Breakfast Club), it's still a memorable, must-see classic a quarter of a century later.

The film follows the adventures of high school kid Marty McFly as he gets mixed up in a plot involving his friend Doc Brown's time-travelling DeLorean, stolen plutonium and angry terrorists. Marty ends up travelling back to 1955 where he must meet the young Doc Brown, try to find a way to get back to 1985 and make sure his parents still meet at the high school dance (otherwise his whole existence is in jeopardy).

Back to the Future was a huge success and made Michael J. Fox a massive star (although filming had originally begun with Eric Stoltz in the lead role). Even though the series played itself out with two diminishing sequels, it's good to see the original movie get a cleaned up re-release and the attention it clearly deserves. We can only wonder whether the film would have been as successful if it had kept its original title - 'Spacemen From Pluto' anyone?

Back to the Future will return to cinemas in October. Check out the brand new trailer below...
