Don't expect to see the good Captain drinking in Coronation Street's Rovers Return though. According to the BBC, filming for the Marvel production will move to the city in September; the reason is that Manchester's Northern Quarter perfectly recreates the look and feel of 1940's New York, due to it's pre-war architecture.

Susan Williams, from the Manc-based Vision+Media film office, told the BBC: "Manchester's Northern Quarter is one of our most popular filming locations in city, thanks to its versatility. The area was a convincing Victorian London in Sherlock Holmes last year."

She also highlighted the benefits of allowing big budget productions like Captain America to film in the area, saying "We believe that projects such as this provide significant financial benefits for the region, providing opportunities for hotels, catering outlets and the regions talented production crew."

Captain America: The First Avenger is due to be released next year, soon after another Marvel film, Kenneth Branagh's Thor, comes out. Both heroes will also make an appearance in The Avengers, alongside Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury and Robert Downey Jnr's Iron Man, which is due to start filming soon.
