Colin Fitz LivesSo you're a young director, your first movie is a huge hit at the Sundance Film Festival and it's being talked up as the next big festival breakout smash to rival Sex, Lies and Videotape and Reservoir Dogs. What do you think happens next? Yacht parties with the Weinsteins? Chatting up Scarlett Johansson at the Oscars? Going bankrupt and sleeping in a storage facility and losing all your money?

Well, If you chose the last one, then you are (sadly) correct because that's exactly what happened to Robert Bella, the director of Colin Fitz Lives! - otherwise known as the greatest movie to never be released. Happily for Robert though, his film is finally going to see the light of day after 13 long years.

Well, If you chose the last one, then you are (sadly) correct because that's exactly what happened to Robert Bella, the director of Colin Fitz Lives! - otherwise known as the greatest movie to never be released. Happily for Robert though, his film is finally going to see the light of day after 13 long years.

In 1997, Colin Fitz Lives! - which cost £95,000 to make - was selected for competition at Sundance, unfortunately, that meant Bella had to get together another huge sum of money to convert it to a 35mm print. Despite being basically broke from making the thing, he eventually maxed out 20 credit cards to get it into the festival where it went down a storm. However, no distribution deal could be found that would cover the costs of making the film leaving Robert in £160,000 worth of debt and the film in limbo.

As he recalls: "I had called in so many favours, crashed on so many couches, and borrowed so much money from friends and relatives that I simply could not bear to ask for yet one more favour. So, I slept in a storage space. Along with all my worldly possessions."

Thankfully, the story does have a happy ending. Bella dragged his way out of debt and spent years trying to buy the film back from his creditors (at this point I would never want to see the damn thing again, but he's made of sterner stuff). IFC have now bought the movie and are giving it a US release (no word on a UK one as of yet). Let's all just pray for his sake that it does well.
