The James Bond actor will be the male lead in the Hollywood version of 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,' according to EW.com's Hollywood Insider. Craig will play scruffy middle-aged journalist Mikael Blomkvist in the upcoming trilogy, helmed by David Fincher.

Hollywood A-listers like Brad Pitt were previously rumored to be cast in the Blomkvist role.

'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' is an award-winning crime novel by the late Swedish author and journalist Stieg Larsson. It's the first in his 'Millennium' trilogy about a journalist who teams with a computer hacker to uncover a world of financial corruption and brutality.

The Hollywood version is due Dec. 21, 2011. A Swedish version was released last year.
