No word yet on what role Pitt -- who is currently filming the baseball flick 'Moneyball' -- will be playing, though it's most likely the character who is conducting the interviews and collecting all of the individual stories, an agent of the United Nations Postwar Commission.

Brad Pitt's production company, Plan B, purchased the rights to the book in 2007 after a bidding war with Leonardo DiCaprio's company, Appian Way. Marc Foster ('Quantum of Solace') is attached to direct the film.

Max Brooks himself broke the news regarding Pitt's casting at the San Diego Comic-Con. The author also revealed that Paramount has optioned two more of his projects: 'The Zombie Survival Guide' and the 'Zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks' graphic novel.

Paramount hopes to have 'World War Z' ready for a Summer 2012 theatrical release.
