Woody Allen's latest romantic comedy-drama, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, debuted out of competition at this year's Cannes film festival. American audiences won't get a chance to see it for themselves until September 22nd, but in the meantime you can check out the new trailer.

The film focuses on two married couples: Alfie (Anthony Hopkins) and Helena (Gemma Jones), and their daughter Sally (Naomi Watts) and her husband Roy (Josh Brolin). Alfie leaves Helena for a younger woman as part of a late life crisis. Helena starts spending her time with a kooky fortune teller (is there any other kind in these films?) and meets a new man. Sally and Roy, meanwhile, are each unhappy in their own marriage and toying with other options. Naturally, since this is an Allen flick, hilarity and drama will be the order of the day.

I'm not the biggest Woody Allen fan in the world, but even putting that aside this trailer doesn't look particularly good. The comedy feels forced and contrived in the clip and even with all of the star power on display, I can't help but feel this is going to wind up as one of the director's more forgettable efforts. Early reviews from Cannes weren't particularly flattering, either -- with Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly saying "The film is notable, if that's the word, for being the first movie Allen has made in London that is every bit as bad as his most awful New York comedies, like Anything Else and Melinda and Melinda." Ouch.

Maybe Gleiberman was just cranky that day. What do you think? Does You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger look like vintage Woody Allen or are you getting a bad vibe too? Hit the jump for the trailer and let us know what you think.
