However, Hansel and Gretel in 3D! (note the exclamation point, please!) will take a few liberties with the Grimms' story. Although there are many different versions of the fairy tale in different cultures, I've never read about one where Hansel and Gretel find themselves in a forest that's "home to the legendary creatures of German mythology. The siblings are thrown into a fast paced magical adventure," as per the press release. Well, at least we'll still have the witch, right?
What's a little more interesting is the production team behind the movie. The writer/producer Kira Madallo Sesay is the CEO of Kalliope Films, which is partnered with The Institute for the Development of Enhanced Perceptual Awareness as co-producers. The Institute (an ominous name for a company, perhaps) was founded by Michael Bay and CEO Scott Gardenhour. The Institute's motto, "Where Brand Science Meets Great Storytelling," makes this movie sound like an idea that a marketer came up with in a brainstorming meeting.
According to the press release, "[The Institute's] unique model employs consumer engagement, marketing, production, financing, and distribution, resulting in marketing and entertainment products that correspond with consumer demand. No matter the length, medium, or format, The Institute generates innovative content to connect with consumers and audiences, create efficiencies, and, ultimately, drive profits."
Of course, trends play a part of the entertainment that's available in the marketplace. That's a no-brainer. But to have only a press release, a production and marketing team with Michael Bay's name vaguely attached, a 2011 shoot date, and a whole lot of buzzword bingo rankles. Is this really what the future of entertainment holds? Or will Hansel and Gretel in 3D! ever make it to production?
