According to the article, Vardalos was approached by Walden Media after the idea was cooked up by Walden VP of development and production Evan Turner. Now that the writer and actress have signed on, the company behind the 'Chronicles of Narnia' franchise and the upcoming 'Ramona and Beezus' is hoping to fill out the rest of the cast and crew and begin production on 'Mother's Day' (which has yet to find a distributor) by the end of the year.

Vardalos is best known for writing and starring in the small romantic comedy 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding,' which became a sleeper summer hit when it made $241 million domestically back in 2002. More recently, she co-wrote and has a supporting role in the upcoming 'Larry Crowne,' starring Julia Roberts and co-writer Tom Hanks (and who also produced 'Greek Wedding').
