Earlier this year I discovered a talented young filmmaker who wow'd me with his neo-giallo short, Yellow Future. Cory Callahan is back with another solid film, but this time he's trading the black gloves for a tale about marital discord in The Architect.
The story has an O. Henry plot twist that seems a little too familiar, but works well considering this is a story told in the span of five minutes. And once again, Cory impresses with his technical prowess. The editing is tight, his shot compositions are interesting and well executed, the changing focus shot on the ear is great, and the symmetry created by the similarity of the opening and closing shots ties things together nicely. This guy creates more visual interest in five minutes than many full-length horror films I've watched this year.
