It would appear that Tom Cruise is thinking about getting the mothballs out of the old flying jacket and practising his volleyball skills again because, yup, it could be time for Top Gun 2.

It's unsurprising news really when you consider the scathing reviews and underwhelming box office performance in the US for his latest film, Knight and Day. A bit like Meat Loaf making Bat Out Of Hell 2: Back Into Hell - Tom wants to remind us all how he got to the top in the first place.

Although this news has existed as rumour for years, the latest update on it comes from none other than Top Gun's producer, Jerry Bruckheimer, himself. He told MTV that he reckons the world is ready for an update on the adventures of Maverick: "We kicked around some ideas because the aviation community has completely changed since we made the movie a long time ago. So we have to find a way in and how to incorporate the Maverick character into it."

He told MTV that he and his late partner, Don Simpson, once had a bash at it and then Tom took over to have a go at a sequel but nothing ever came of it.

Hmmm, I'm not sure how much the original film had to do with the 'aviation community' in the first place. However, if they are going to update Top Gun in line with modern times, we'll could probably look forward to two hours of Maverick staying on the ground due to some pesky volcanic ash. Take my breath away indeed.
