Johnny DeppWe're nowhere near the 1st April so it's a bit late for pranks... but there's a rumour circulating around the internet that's getting bigger. Basically, reports are coming in that we could be looking at a big screen Doctor Who movie in 2012... starring Johnny Depp as the Tardis driving hero.

Now if that's not enough excitement for you, the other news is that Who writer (and rejuvenator) Russell T. Davies is supposedly on board to pen the script. Wow...

According to Tor.com, they picked up the story (which has now disappeared) from a site called PubArticles.com, which had 'sources' from an unnamed studio declaring that the film was confirmed with a release date for 2012.

They also carried quotes from an interview with Davies, who declared, "Bringing the Who franchise to the theatres is a regeneration for the character beyond the usual one. A theatrical release has a greater range and can reach millions of more people than just the fans. There will be brand new concepts and the film will be just as adventurous, scary and humorous as the television programme."

Davies then went on to add that the plot would involve the doctor whizzing through time and around the world, curing alien-created diseases such as bubonic plague and Ebola. Before you start thinking that sounds more Doctor Kildare than Doctor Who, the writer concluded with: "(N)one of us working the film will forget what makes the character great and interesting and the long-time fans will not be disappointed because yes, the Daleks make an appearance."

Although Davies has admitted in the past that he throws curve balls to the press to put them off the scent, the mystery has deepened as Tor.com have revealed in an update that studio sources have actually confirmed to them that Depp has definitely signed up and the movie will be coming out in 2012.

While that all sounds great, consider that IMDb lists Depp as having 14 films currently in development and two in production - none of them listed are Doctor Who. If there is going to be a Who/Depp movie in two years time, he may need a real-life time machine after all...
