Being a parent is never easy. In today's modern world, moms and dads face an ever-growing array of concerns and dangers as they try to steer their children through a minefield of online predators, violent video games and good, old-fashioned hazing at school. But if you think it's stressful just being a parent, imagine being the parent of a superhero.

Well, that's the task facing Jon Tenney, as Variety is reporting that the veteran actor has been tapped to play Hal Jordan's dad in next year's Warner Bros. blockbuster 'The Green Lantern.' Tenney, who is best known for his role as Kyra Sedgwick's husband on 'The Closer,' joins Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively and Peter Sarsgaard in the story of a fearless pilot who becomes protector of Earth when he receives a power ring from a dying alien space cop. If Tenney seems a little young to be playing dad to Reynolds, don't worry, because Martin Jordan is likely to appear only in flashback. That's because in the comics, Tenney's character, a daring test pilot whom the young Hal idolizes, gets himself totally blown up during a experimental flight, meaning that he won't be around long enough to worry about seeing his son take on super-powered foes like Sarsgaard's giant-headed telepath Hector Hammond.

With the role, of course, Tenney joins a prestigious list of dead dads who have inspired their superhero sons, including Linus Roache as the murdered Thomas Wayne in 'Batman Begins,' David Keith as the murdered Jack Murdock in 'Daredevil,' Jon Slattery as car accident victim Howard Stark in 'Iron Man 2' and even the legendary Marlon Brando as Jor-El in 'Superman,' who had a more stylish exit when his entire planet exploded. And that's not even getting into extended family like Peter Parker's poor Uncle Ben.

Come to think of it, being a superhero parent isn't so tough after all, is it. Because it's hard to get stressed out when you're already dead.

You can see the latest spandex Oedipal complex play out on the big screen when 'Green Lantern' hits theaters on June 17, 2011.
