Matt DamonOkay, let's be honest: A story about a guy randomly deciding to buy an entire zoo for his family to live on doesn't immediately sound like the next huge Hollywood blockbuster. Unless, of course, you were to suddenly throw Matt Damon into the mix.

Well, consider it done: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Damon is currently in talks with Fox to play the lead role in Cameron Crowe's latest project, the appropriately titled 'We Bought a Zoo.' Based on the memoirs of regular Joe-turned-zookeeper Benjamin Mee, the film, which we first told you about last month, is expected to be a family heartwarmer along the lines of 'Marley & Me.'

Mee, as the report states, "used his life savings to buy a dilapidated zoo, replete with 200 exotic animals facing destruction, in the English countryside," then "had to balance caring for his wife, who was dying of brain cancer, with dealing with escaped tigers, raising endangered animals, working with an eclectic skeleton crew and readying the zoo for a reopening." While the role may at first seem out of character for the man who brought you hard-boiled action hero Jason Bourne, Damon has been working hard in recent years to broaden his range, nailing parts in comedies like 'Ocean's 11' and 'The Informant!' as well as dramas such as 'Invictus' and 'The Departed.' Indeed, it seems as though a touching family piece like 'Zoo' may be about the only thing left that Damon hasn't done, further proving the feeling in many circles that Damon has quietly become Hollywood's preeminent movie star.

'We Bought a Zoo' is tentatively scheduled to arrive in theaters on Dec. 23, 2011.
