CATEGORIES Casting, Cinematical
There are at least a few of us here at Cinematical who think that Kristen Bell isn't living up to her potential on the big screen. I've imagined seven prime roles for Bell, while just last week Perri cooked up ways Bell could spice up her on-screen relationships. Because really, her trajectory is aggravating as all hell. She made her big splash with the smart, funny, crafty, and beautiful Veronica Mars, eliciting love from the common folk and geek names like Kevin Smith and Joss Whedon, but now all she serves us is romcoms that seem to be getting worse as she goes. Of course, she does have a sexy role in burlesque on the way, and now there might be one more romcom-free gig to add to her roster.

That's good news .... right?

Not so fast. At first, this new film Bell is eying sounds ideal. The Hollywood Reporter posts that she's negotiating to join Whales, a project Universal is cooking up with Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski. Delightfully, it's not a feature about large women a la Shallow Hal, but rather a true story in Cold War-era 1988 where a small-time news reporter (Krasinski) and a volunteer at Greenpeace (Barrymore) get the US and Russia into a temporary peace to "save three majestic gray whales trapped under the ice of the Arctic Circle."

Sounds great, right? No goofy romance or airheadedness in sight! Huzzah! That is, until you get to the role Bell is looking at. Should she sign on the dotted line, she'll play "a reporter from Los Angeles aiming for the big time, who thinks her greatest assets are her looks."

Oh Bell, what are we going to do with you?
