I've been cautiously optimistic for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. I'm not sure why. I've been dissatisfied with the previous Narnia installments, but the third time can often be the charm, especially with a new studio (Fox -- I know, I know) and a new director (Michael Apted) on board. Plus, the book is great. It's episodic and the religious symbolism is heavy, but there's all kinds of spooky adventures on the Narnian sea. Plus, there's a dragon.

The first trailer for Dawn Treader hit today, courtesy of a Narnia fan site called MundoNarnia (watch it after the jump). I know I'm about to open myself to comments of being close-minded and biased against the series from the start, but I've wanted desperately to like this. Especially this installment. And it just doesn't look good. It's bathed in syrupy, candy-colored lighting, the CGI is wonky, and the acting and pacing seem all over the place. While Dawn Treader is more of a jaunty adventure than the previous two let's-save-Narnia stories, this seems a little too slick. There are some dark and scary moments in the book (the part where Lucy looks in the book is truly sad), but you'd never know it from this. I'm not entirely clear what story this is even selling -- there was no fairy girl that I can remember, and they can retire the White Witch any day now.

But maybe I'm just being a grump. The hardcore Narnia fans will undoubtedly tell me. Tell me what you think of the trailer below.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader hits theaters on December 10, 2010.
