As a general rule, I have a personal aversion to the concept of 'guy things' and 'girl things' in our pop culture landscape. But, I have come to accept the fact that I'm one of the few women I know that loves Caddyshack. I've been watching this movie since I was a kid and as the years have gone by my sense of humor has grown up right along with it (bet you never thought you would see the words grown-up and Caddyshack in the same sentence). Of course, as a kid, the dancing gopher was the height of hilarity, but as I've hit adulthood, I've learned to love Tai's (Chevy Chase) non-sequiturs and Carl (Bill Murray), the demented groundskeeper.
Released in 1980, Caddyshack was the directorial debut of Harold Ramis, and centered on a lovable screw-up working at the local country club for the summer. So I might have been clueless to some of the raunchier parts of the script, the one thing I knew for sure was that I loved the opening song, and that's why today's Summer Scenes (Songs) We Love, is all about the classic 80's number, I'm Alright by Kenny Loggins.
"Alright" had been recorded specifically for the film, and Loggins was already a household name when the song was released. But these days, other than a random appearance on American Idol, he has seemingly faded from the spotlight. In the 80's, Loggins was the man when it came to movie music; providing songs for soon to be '80s classics like Top Gun and Footloose. He even contributed to the soundtrack to the ill-advised Caddyshack II, but I won't hold that against him, because nothing can take away from his crowning movie music achievement; a theme song for underachievers (of the male and female variety) the world over.
As an added bonus; my runner-up for best Loggins movie song..
