It's hard to believe there was a time when Tom Cruise wasn't a mega-star, but it's true. This interview the actor did way back in August of 1983 to promote Risky Business finds Cruise looking very young and almost bewildered by all the newfound attention that's come his way. Cruise may be best known now for being a bit of a bully in interviews (you're glib!) or jumping on couches, but he's downright restrained and charming in this chat with Kathie Lee Gifford on Good Morning America.
The fresh-faced young actor spends four minutes talking with Kathie Lee (check out her 'do ... ) and interestingly enough, he doesn't look all that different than he does now, 27 years later. The interview isn't particularly deep -- Cruise talks about how his newfound fame has "opened a lot of doors" and the usual actor-speak about respecting his craft. He does get a little candid in talking about how making films and his fame is a little bit "frightening" because of the pressure, but that's about as interesting as the answers get -- unless you were dying to know who Cruise was dating back in 1983. Kathie Lee tries to get the answer to that, but Tom plays it smooth.
Hit the jump to check out the clip. There's nary a single mention of Scientology in it and Tom manages to stay in his seat for the duration. It's so prim and proper that I found myself almost missing the clearly insane and defiant modern version of Cruise. C'mon Tom -- the least you could do is give us a big toothy grin with that crazy stare you're so good at...
