What do you do when there's no James Bond? Head to the beach!

Deadline reports that Sam Mendes isn't letting the delay in the latest James Bond adventure keep him from booking his next project -- or two. The 'Revolutionary Road' director is eyeing 'On Chesil Beach,' based on the novel by Ian McEwan ('Atonement').

'On Chesil Beach' takes place in 1963 and revolves around two repressed virgins in their early 20s whose attempt to consummate ends badly. Mendes is already courting Carey Mulligan to play a lead role. What do you do when there's no James Bond? Head to the beach!

Though 'On Chesil Beach' hasn't been officially greenlit by Focus Features, Mendes is confident enough it will happen that he has already informed Disney that he should be no longer considered to direct 'The Great and Powerful Oz.' However, Mendes remains committed to direct the 23rd Bond film once the ownership issues get sorted out at MGM.

Mendes is also preparing a new stage production of 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,' which is shooting for a holiday 2011 premiere in London. The show will later move to Broadway and Warner Bros. is already planning a movie version to follow.
